Loud/Great sound, Cheap, Legal

Choose two.

Great sounding and Cheap (straight pipes) - illegal, at least in NC

Cheap and Legal (resonator delete) - too quiet for me

Great sounding and legal (Corsa, Borla) - it ain’t cheap at all

And while I’m here, can anyone name the car that has a muffler like the one above, but it’s tilted 90° and exits at the front fender?

Straight pipes!

The Nissan LMP1 car?

Nope. I actually think it’s a car off some video game, maybe one from Mafia II.

I ended up with a legal 2.5” stainless system for my Escort, since dad had one from a parts car... A bit too drony/loud and highway for me, but otherwise good. Sounds decent at normal driving without being loud, and it was FREE for me. Else yes, they cost a buck and a few organs normally.

I went with option 3. Just let some other sucker take the fall and buy it used. Went with a Mugen twinloop set-up with Buddyclub race headers and a 200CEL cat. My garage floor is sooty, and it makes a glorious meaty noise, but I dont look like a teenage cock driving into work

The purchase is one thing, but on average, how much more does the labor cost to install it? I'm completely unexperienced, and a hot exhaust pipe falling on my face wouldn't exactly be the best thing.

Exhaust is easy, especially on new cars. Most of the systems are modular, so after the car cools (important step) you disconnect the muffler from the midpipe from the cat (or the headers if the cat is built into the mid, depends on the car). Then you take it off the hangers one piece at a time. Put the new stuff on the hangers, test fit, and bolt it all back up. Exhaust is only a real pain when the pieces have rusted together. Headers and turbo downpipes can be harder because of cramped quarters, but it’s all still straightforward. Also, if you screw up, you’re not going to damage anything, just have a loud leak that lets you know that you need to tighten a bolt or reseat a gasket.

I just bought SLP loudmouth for my 14 Camaro SS, wasn’t to bad in price and its basically straight pipes, I went with the axle back so Im still running the stock resonator. you might want to look at pics of stock exhaust on your car. on my 14 I no matter what have to cut it because its all welded together into one piece from the manifold back.

Sometimes you get lucky. There’s an exhaust from a company called “Manzo” on eBay who made an exhaust for the IS300. Great sound, very cheap, great looks, and it included a b-pipe, so it got a few more ponies as well. Looked stock enough to pass by the coppers, too.

I did it all myself and I’m not very experienced at all. Exhausts are the easiest, just a few bolts. unless you have an old car with heaps of rust its not really an issue if you get an exhaust which is a direct bolt-on. Headers can be difficult sometimes depending on how tight your engine bay is, but again a Honda engine is jammed pack and it took me and a mate a few hours of cursing but we got there.

Gibson was the go-to back when I worked at a truck shop. good price good quality. I had one on one of my old explorers. I might be putting one on my wifes Escape.

I would say anything over about $300 is just no, which disqualifies most full exhaust systems. I found some flowmaster 40s and 44s on eBay for about $100.

I forgot that they just bolt on, I always thought that there was welding involved.

The aluminum would be about 450 maybe. That’s the whole cat back. I can’t image the Flowmaster being more that just the muffler itself for 100

I think I made the decision. SLP Loudmouth 1. What's the price on a cheap one of those? The LM2s are about $130 on EBay, that's only the muffler.

Question: If just the LM1 mufflers are installed, will it sound the same as the full LM1 exhaust system? That's a $473 difference right there.

I’m pretty sure resonators and mufflers are different things. someone else can probably answer that better than me. but as far as cat/back or just muffler, the full system will probably have larger diameter pipes than your stock system giving you better flow and probably better power. I’m also guess that would alter the sound more than just a muffler.
